Rules vs Principles

The benefits from teaching painting workshops around the province are varied...mostly terrific. I meet a lot of great people extending themselves and exploring the process of making art. I get to coach and assist and pass on experiences I have had and the wisdom of painters that came before.
I also get to hear what other teachers have left behind. Frequently I hear," always do this, never do that, something is 'good', something is 'bad'... you know what I mean. Principles have the ability to provide a platform from which a decision can be made. Rules often limit the decision making to ridged process and thereby a programmed result. Principles allow the heart and mind to be engaged...The result is a unique decision that makes you the source that took a guideline or principle applied as you saw fit. Multiply that process throughout a painting and the painting is really yours.
This plein air piece was done in June. The hills to the left were green. the hills to the right were green. the hill to the back was blue-green. The water was dark green. the guideline for the painting was 'no green'. Well, I snuck in a little.
